MINUTES OF THE FRIDAY HARBOR SAILING CLUB,  2-9-10

Commodore Rebecca Hughes opened the meeting at 6:55 P.M.  She and Howard Crowell had just returned from a vacation in Panama , about which she briefly spoke and  highly recommends. 

She invited representatives from each table to announce any news and to introduce guests.  Among the guests were James Fritz, a transplant from Seattle who has a 43’ sailboat soon to be brought to the island.  Also introduced were Bill and Brenda Willis , Tim Thomsen, our speaker for the evening, and Bill and Laura Severson , who have a 44’ Hunter and who are from Bremerton.  Other guests were Bob and Yvonne Mancuso who invited the membership to accompany them in early June for their planned circumnavigation of Vancouver Island; they have a 35’ C&C.  Terry and Linda Lush will celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary this month.  Fred Hoeppner and Paul Barger  had birthdays on the 7th.  Joyce Johnson celebrated her birthday on the 6th and she and Torry have a new granddaughter who was the second new island baby this year.

Social Chair Brenda Pound introduced the evening’s kitchen staff, Ed and Shireene Hale.  Marie Di Cristina created the beautiful Valentine’s Day table decorations which were each being offered for a $4 donation. 

Howard Crowell presented the Anchoring Award to Newsletter Editor Norris Palmer.  Lloyd Bacon commended Norris for his fine work on the “Working Jib” and the membership responded with a round of applause.

Commodore Hughes and Treasurer Karen Palmer conducted the raffle for items of club apparel.  Therese Pratt and Terry Lush were the lucky winners.  Haberdasher Mary-Brooke Barger then introduced the new clothing, hooded sweatshirts which she and Commodore Hughes modeled.  Mary-Brooke, who is now dealing with “Gear for Sports”, extolled the quality of the new long sleeve tees and stylish jackets.  She will sell what we have in old inventory and then gradually introduce the new items.  The club mugs,  for $8 to $10, are now available through the haberdashery and can be special-ordered.

Secretary Therese Pratt directed the membership to the posted minutes of January’s meetings and requested that any corrections or changes be mentioned to her.

Treasurer Karen Palmer reported that nearly all the renewals are in and that our current cash standing amounts to $10,126.

Rear Commodore Ken Krooswyk summarized the meeting he held with the various cruise captains.  They were successful in planning a schedule and he may add a cruise to Sucia . A possible trip to the west coast of Vancouver Island was also discussed..  He is open to two summer cruises, for example, the South Sound or Desolation Sound.  The Deer Harbor Cruise is set for February 27th. .Commodore Hughes mentioned that the Yacht Club would like us to participate in Opening Day on San Juan Island.  She hopes the members will take part in the salute and the parade and still be able to share festivities with the Lopez Island Yacht Club.

Commodore Hughes reminded the membership that April 10th is the date for the Flotsam Sea and Flea Fair and that Gloria Bentzen will be helping and accepting donations for the club booth.  She announced that Howard Crowell is accepting ads for the roster.

Newsletter Editor Norris Palmer requested articles and mentioned that the Coast Guard and the RCMP are actively patrolling the area and are doing a good job.

Vice-Commodore Ed Hale announced that our speakers for the March meeting will be Ted and Terry Kruth.

With no further business, Commodore Hughes concluded the meeting at 7:30 P.M. and requested that the members help with cleanup by putting the chairs away.
