MINUTES OF THE FRIDAY HARBOR SAILING CLUB GENERAL MEETING, 11-9-10
Site: Friday Harbor Grange Hall
Commodore Rebecca Hughes called the meeting to order at 7:03 P.M. She directed the membership’s attention to the Round-the-County Race commemorative posters designed by Jayne Hemmerich and indicated that they are available for purchase. The raffle was held and among the winners of posters, canvas bag, etc. were Vice-Commodore Ed Hale, Jan Champlin, and Susan Eberhard.
Commodore Hughes then thanked all those responsible for a most successful Round-the County Race: Lloyd and Mary Bacon, Terry and Linda Lush, Paul Barger, Mary Lou Sternitzke, Gloria Bentzen and all the other volunteers. Susie Hendrix stated that photos of the race can be viewed on the Hemmerich’s website, lhemmerich@knottydog.com. The posters can also be ordered on this site. Terry Lush said the race results are posted on oiyc.org, the Orcas Island Yacht Club’s website.
Representatives from each table announced their news. Ken Krooswyk , Ted Kruth, and Brenda and Jim Pound all celebrate birthdays this month. Dennis Pratt launched his new 10’ tug, “Ladybug” which he and his daughter Elizabeth constructed themselves. He and Therese will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary next month. Linda Lush gave an update on Dave Ross’s recovery process. She has the address for those wishing to send cards. The Kruth’s have a new boat, “Northern Lights”, which is the “sister-ship” of “Hawk’s Moon”. A guest this evening, Dave Stanford introduced himself saying he has a Hunter36’,”Trixie”, moored in C42. Fred Hoeppner congratulated all members involved in the Round-the County Race for having done an excellent and most professional job. He mentioned that 71 boats participated.
Commodore Hughes announced that she will be the club’s liaison for the Lighted Boat Parade this year, which is scheduled for December 11th. She will soon meet with the Lions Club and the fire department to draft plans.
Ron DiCristina suggested that we clean out the storage locker and discard any items we no longer want or need. Commodore Hughes said she and several volunteers will clean it out, set a deadline for members to claim any items deemed unwanted, and offer unclaimed items for sale at next year’s Flotsam Market. Susan Eberhard, Jan Champlin, and Ron DiCristina volunteered to help. She asked that members or past officers return any keys they may be holding for the unit.
Secretary Therese Pratt asked members to peruse the minutes and direct any changes or corrections to her. She thanked Susan Eberhard for taking the minutes of the last Board meeting.
Treasurer Karen Palmer reported that we remain on budget and have nearly $9930 cash on hand after writing a $500 check to the Sailing Foundation. Commodore Hughes added that she will be personally handing the check to the Foundation hoping to get press coverage in the Journal and the San Juan Update. She looks forward to the Foundation developing a closer relationship with our club in the future.
Commodore Hughes asked for everyone’s participation in club events scheduled for next year. Jan Champlin suggested that our boaters offer rides to those without vessels so that participation can be increased.
Rear Commodore Ken Krooswyk said we had a most successful cruising season and would like to hear from members who have ideas for cruise destinations next year.
Fleet Co-Fleet Captain Dennis Pratt said he was pleased with this year’s racing events and is confident that next year will be as good if not better.
Newsletter Editor Norris Palmer posed the question of how to increase participation in racing. Jan Champlin said the number of race entries has remained steady for quite some years. Fred Hoeppner said he is still learning after 30 years of sailing. He gave a brief history of the local racing community and their activities. He encouraged those who cruise to come out and race and not to be intimidated. Larry Hemmerich suggested that we race other yacht clubs. Co-Fleet Captain Howard Lewis invited all boaters to learn to race by coming out to Mitchell Bay at 1:00 before our summer pot lucks.
Newsletter Editor Norrris Palmer reported that the “Working Jib” is now accessible via the website but that some members are experiencing difficulty downloading it. He wants those members to let him know. Commodore Hughes thanked Les Arnott for doing such a wonderful job in modifying the website.
Commodore Hughes modeled the new club jacket. Today is the deadline for pre-ordering. The cost, which includes our embroidered logo, is $70.
Commodore Hughes reported that Historian Gloria Bentzen is working on the new acid-free albums.
Social Chair Brenda Pound introduced and thanked this evening’s kitchen staff, Bill and Norma Mason. Mary Bacon created the decorations.
Jan Champlin said the $5000 is needed from individual groups in order to qualify for matching funds for the Derelict Vessel Program. She asked that we consider contributing. Newsletter Editor Norris Palmer opined that we need to join the effort to raise this amount. Commodore Hughes requested that the question be added to the agenda at the next Board meeting.
Jan Champlin recommended that we read Warren Miller’s recent article on the San Juan Islander website. It describes a solo circumnavigation of the world by a local female senior citizen.
Co-Fleet Captain Howard Lewis requested a few moments to tell the membership that Mary is very ill and to ask that we keep her in our thoughts and prayers. Commodore Hughes responded that we will do so and asked him to keep us informed.
Vice-Commodore Ed Hale announced that the slate of officers for next year still lacks a nominee for Vice-Commodore. He believes Gloria Bentzen will agree to fill the Trustee’s position. Jan Champlin agreed to become Social Chair but wants help. Secretary Therese Pratt agreed to serve one more year in that position. He then introduced the owners of San Juan Canvas, the speakers for this evening.
Commodore Hughes adjourned the meeting at 8:01 P.M.
Respectfully submitted,
Therese Pratt, Secretary
