Notice of Race

Join us for the Summer Raced, Saturday August 21, 2021


*  One day of short to medium fun races.
*  Set in and around Friday Harbor and San Juan Channel area.
*  Race your cruiser or cruise your racer all racing in one division.
*  Meet us at the Shipyard cove Harbormasters room after the race for snacks and drinks and trophy presentation.

Sailing Instructions

Entry Fee: No entry fee requirement

Courses: We plan to have short to medium distance racing in and around the Friday Harbor and San Juan Channel area Saturday, August 21, 2021. Courses will be selected by the race committee based on wind and currents and will be announced approximately 15 minutes before the start time. Consult your charts for hazards to navigation! Please be aware of the reef that extends from the South end of Brown Island towards the vertical day marker #2. Do not pass between this marker #2 and the near shore as it is a restricted area due to this reef.  

A. S/F - Reid Rock #27 round either way - S/F   1.9 miles

B. S/F - Reid Rock to port - Low Island to port - Reid Rock to Starboard - S/F  8miles

C. S/F - Turn point reef outer marker #3 to starboard - Coast Guard buoy to port (Cattle Point area) - Turn Point outer marker #3 to port - Reed Rock to Port - S/F 12.75 miles

D. S/F - Reid Rock to port - around Jones Island either way - Reid Rock to Starboard - S/F 13 miles

E. S/F - Reid Rock round either way - S/F buoy to port - Reid Rock either way - S/F  3.8 miles

Communications: Race Committee will monitor VHF channel 72. Please log your finish time using UTC/Standard time and report it to the race committee and channel 72.

Start type: This will be a self-start with no committee boat. Boats must not cross the start line before the start time. The start/finish line will be between the vertical day marker #2  at the South end of Brown Island and an orange inflatable race buoy approximately 100 yards to the East. We will use UTC/Standard Time with horns at 5 minutes to start, 4 minutes to start, 1 minute to start and then at the start.

Schedule: First start will be at 1100 hrs. UTC/Standard time on Saturday with first horn planned for 1055. Additional starts will follow the completion of the first race and will be announced on VHF channel 72. Deadline to complete racing is 1600. We will use UTC/Standard time for all calculations of handicaps.

Social events: Drinks, snacks and trophy presentation will be held immediately after racing in the Harbormaster room at Shipyard cove.

Rules: The regatta will be governed by The Racing Rules of Sailing, the prescriptions of the U.S. Sailing Association, except as changed by this Notice of Race and the General Race Rules of the Friday Harbor Sailing Club. These General Racing Rules will supersede all others in the event of a conflict. There is no protest committee so don't even try. Sail clean and fair and no sniveling, we race to have fun.

Ratings: PHRF ratings will be used as modified as necessary by the Fleet Captain of FHSC. All ratings are subject to review and may be adjusted to promote fair and equitable racing with in the Friday Harbor Sailing Club events by the Fleet Captain.

Fleets: We plan one division, combining both race and cruising divisions.  Cruisers without a PHRF certificate will be assigned a rating.

Safety: Boats shall sail with US Sailing SER nearcoast safety equipment. Each boat must have a VHF radio capable of monitoring channel 72.. Current navigational charts of the area should be on board. Tidal and current tables should be considered as these can be extreme. Please look out for other racers and safely assist when possible.

Responsibility: The skipper of each boat is responsible to help in the operation of the racing program and for any unsportsmanlike conduct on the part of their crew. All boats are required to be insured by valid third-party liability insurance with a minimum coverage of $300,000 per event or the equivalent.  All competitors in Friday Harbor Sailing Club events participate at their own risk. It shall be the responsibility of the skipper to inform the crew of the risks of sailboat racing, to make sure they understand and accept those risks, to decide whether the crew is competent and adequate for the event, and to decide whether to start or continue in a race. The Friday Harbor Sailing Club, its officers, directors and members accept no responsibility for damage to property, injury or loss of life as competitors participate
